🔰Can Unani Medicine Measurably Improve “Mitochondrial Resilience”?

Mitochondria sit at the intersection of energy production, oxidative stress, inflammation, metabolic adaptation and ageing. Their resilience is not simply about producing ATP—it includes the ability to maintain membrane potential, control ROS, repair or remove damaged mitochondria, and adapt to metabolic stress.

Now consider the Unani framework.

Mizaj → Akhlat → Quwwat → Tabiyat → metabolism → pathology

Could some of these classical constructs have measurable biological correlates?

A particularly intriguing bridge is Ihtiraq.

Classical Unani medicine describes Ihtiraq as an excessive/deteriorative “combustion” phenomenon. Modern researchers have proposed a conceptual correlation between Ihtiraq and oxidative stress—while emphasizing that this remains a hypothesis requiring molecular validation.

This creates a powerful research pathway:

Mizaj phenotyping
Metabolic & lifestyle assessment
Unani diagnosis of Su-e-Mizaj / Ihtiraq-related patterns
Individualized Tadabeer + Ghiza + Advia
Mitochondrial & metabolic biomarkers
Clinical outcomes

Possible research endpoints could include:

• ATP/bioenergetic capacity
• Mitochondrial membrane potential
• mtDNA copy number
• Oxidative-stress markers
• Inflammatory biomarkers
• Metabolic flexibility
• Exercise tolerance
• Indicators of mitochondrial quality control

Importantly, “mitochondrial resilience” should not be equated with one biomarker. A composite, validated index may ultimately be more meaningful.

The goal should NOT be to force modern biology into classical terminology.

The goal is more ambitious:

Can classical Unani phenotypes generate testable biological hypotheses?

And ultimately:

Can a personalized Unani intervention produce measurable improvement in cellular resilience?

If yes, Mizaj may move from a descriptive clinical concept toward a testable systems-biology phenotype.

That is not proof.

It is a research hypothesis worth investigating.
