🔰 Unani Medicine: Are We Preserving It—or Slowly Freezing It in Time?
Here is an uncomfortable question for the Unani community:
If our predecessors questioned the knowledge they inherited, why are we sometimes afraid to question what we inherited from them?
Greek medicine was not simply preserved by the Arab and Persian physicians.
It was translated, debated, criticised, expanded and clinically reworked.
Al-Razi challenged established views.
Ibn Sina systematised and synthesised knowledge.
Al-Zahrawi advanced surgery.
Ibn al-Nafis challenged Galenic anatomy.
They were not intellectual photocopiers.
When the tradition reached India, it evolved again—through Indian clinical experience, local materia medica, pharmacological innovation and generations of physicians.
That is the real history of Unani: evolution through inquiry.
❗So why should intellectual evolution stop with the classical masters?
A classical statement deserves respect.
But does it automatically deserve permanent immunity from questioning?
A centuries-old therapeutic claim may be valuable—but should we not ask:
• Does it still work in today's patients?
• Can we reproduce the clinical observation?
• What is the pharmacological plausibility?
• Where does traditional theory explain the observation—and where does it fall short?
• Can modern research strengthen, refine or correct our understanding?
If we cannot ask these questions, are we protecting Unani—or weakening it?
Modernisation should not mean replacing Unani with modern medicine.
And tradition should not mean replacing clinical reasoning with quotations.
The future demands something harder:
Classical depth + clinical experience + scientific curiosity + intellectual courage.
We should preserve the framework, not fossilise every conclusion.
We should honour our masters enough to continue the questioning they themselves practised.
Perhaps the greatest threat to Unani medicine is not criticism from outside.
It is the possibility that we stop critically engaging with it from within.
So here is the debate:
❗Should every classical Unani concept be presumed correct until disproved—or should every therapeutic claim earn its place through continuing clinical and scientific scrutiny?
I believe Unani medicine will become stronger—not weaker—when we are brave enough to ask.
